Daniel Sievert and Laurent Hissier
from the restoration workshop of the Palace of Versailles wrote this abundantly illustrated technical book. That is to say if they are able to transmit to the reader the processes of their profession by relying on a large number of exceptional objects, whether furniture and frames, but also woodwork, stucco and even roof ornaments. Thus, this is not just a book on gilding on wood, but a reference work on all the techniques of the gilder's trade.
After some thoughts on how to exercise their profession within the framework of the Château, the authors review the products and tools used. So as not to leave anything in the shadows, they do not hesitate to do reports at the last gold beater in France (the Dauvet house, active since 1764) or at a manufacturer of gilders' tools (irons to be repaired of the Da Silva house).
Gilding techniques are then described at length, and countless photographs show the gestures and processes used by professionals. Tempera gilding
(also known as water gilding), the most beautiful because capable of incomparable brilliance, is detailed in its 18 steps. Mixture gilding
(or oil gilding), which is mainly used outdoors at Versailles, is then explained. Background games and other gilding techniques (Greek style, on paper, on plaster, on glass, with adherent leaves) are also exhibited.
About twenty masterpieces that contain the collections of the Castle
and which have been restored by the gilding workshop are then examined and the interventions described with an illustration rich in detail. Certain rooms decorated with carved and gilded woodwork are a pretext for magnificent photographs illustrating the work of gilders of yesterday and today. The last pages deal with decorative painting
(faux marble and faux wood) often associated with gilding. The book ends with a glossary, biographical notices of the craftsmen mentioned, a list of Internet sites, suppliers and specialized works.
